Group Assessment - the good, bad and ugly

So much of what we do in the workforce, we do as part of a team. Some jobs just can’t be done without a team working together. Whether it’s construction workers performing team lifts to move large items or working collaboratively with a team to make decisions or brainstorm ideas. Working as part of a team is just something that we all have to be able to do effectively to be competent in our job roles......

Reliability and…….actors?

You know when you kinda know something, but the thought is just so unsavoury, that you just ignore the thought, almost at a subconscious level. That was me until I heard this statement said out loud during the last VELG conference I attended. You cannot use students to participate in or observe role plays if they themselves will be assessed using the same role play tool. (my paraphrase).....

How to create assessment tools….post validation rant

Validation makes me cranky.

Sometimes I think we just make life easy for ASQA auditors. Every tool I’ve validated this month I’ve been able to find a critical non-compliance within 1 minute. That is not cool!

If you want tips on how to write assessment tools properly, you can go directly to page 57-58 of the User’s guide to the Standards for Registered Training Organisations 2015, or you can hang around for a cranky, but plain English tutorial.

How to start an argument in VET……AQF in assessment design and delivery

This blog post is definitely going to create debate, so I’d like to apologise in advance, because I know that this is a controversial subject in VET.

I want to talk about AQF in terms of assessment. Bringing this up in a VET forum is a bit like talking about religion or politics at a family Christmas lunch. You probably shouldn’t , because you know its just going to end up in an argument.....

That’s not compliant because…..I don’t like it

Seems some of you liked my last rant, so since I have an audience to blurt out my frustrations to, I thought I’d grab your ear and keep raving!

Now before I start, I’m not saying I’m a VET guru. I get things wrong, often. I may (likely even) have some of the statements in this blog wrong. I’m happy to debate it out, and happier if I learn something from that debate.

So here goes….my list of things I’ve heard from other VET professionals that I just don’t agree with (and my justifications).....
